Abstract

1,102,738. Polishing. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 27 Jan., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966]; No. 4201/67. Heading B3D. A device for polishing specimens 24 of substantially cylindrical shape comprises a rotary polishing disc 8 having a flat abrasive face 10 at right-angles to its axis of rotation, and a mechanism for retaining and driving specimens in rotation which has at least one roller 38 mounted for free rotation on a spindle 40 parallel to the driving-shaft 6 of the disc 8, and a wheel 32 mounted to rotate freely on a spindle 34 also parallel to the driving-shaft 6, the wheel being applied against and driven by a cone 26 coaxial, and coupled for rotation, with the disc, the position of the roller and wheel being such that friction between the disc and specimen causes the specimen to be applied against the roller and the wheel. The disc is rotatably mounted in a base-plate 4 having brackets 12 for pivotally supporting an arm 18 connected to a plate 16. Holes 22 are formed in the plate for receiving specimens 24, and each hole is associated with a separate roller 38 and wheel 32 having a rubber rim 36. The cone 26 is rotatably mounted on a spindle 28 on the plate 16 and has a slot for engaging a tenon 30 on the shaft 6. With the plate in the operative position shown and specimens 24 in the holes 22, rotation of the disc 8 rotates cone 26 and urges the specimens against the rollers and wheels 32. The wheels are axially slidable on their spindles and their weight urges them into frictional engagement with the cone so that they rotate and impart rotation to the specimens. In other embodiments, the plate 16 is slidable on a support bracket or carried by a parallelogram, and the cone is driven by friction or a magnetic coupling or is rigidly fixed to the disc.
