1455325 Polishing specimens RATHENOWER OPTISCHE WERK VEB 1 March 1974 [2 March 1973] 9322/74 Heading B3D A device for producing flat and/or planeparallel polished sections for microscopic analysis comprises a horizontally rotating polishing wheel 1 on which at least one pair of cylindrical specimen holders 3 are disposed, the or each pair of specimen holders being driven by friction from a drive roller 4 which engages a common drive wheel 2 at the centre of the polishing wheel, and supporting rollers 5 for preventing the specimen holders from corotating with the polishing wheel. As described, four specimen holders 3 are mounted on the polishing wheel 1, and each of two drive rollers 4 engages a respective pair of the holders and the common drive wheel 2 which may be driven in the same or opposite direction to the wheel 2 or be freely rotatable. The drive rollers 4 co-operate with the supporting rollers 5 to prevent the specimen holders rotating with the polishing wheel. The drive rollers 4 and supporting rollers 5 have both cylindrical and conical surfaces 4a, 4b and are axially adjustable to engage corresponding cylindrical and conical surfaces 3a, 3b in the specimen holders 3. The surface 3c of the holder engaging the specimen 6 is also conical to reduce tilting of the specimen which is urged towards the polishing wheel 1 by a spring or mass 7. To produce this specimen, each holder 9, Fig. 3, receives in plurality of specimens lowered to a position determined by a micrometer 10 having stop pins 12 which are mounted in a plate 11 and engage the holder.
