Abstract
878,008. Feeding magnetic tapes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 6, 1958 [Feb. 12, 1957], No. 4707/57. Class 40 (2). [Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] In an apparatus for feeding a magnetic tape in a record/playback apparatus, wherein a shaft 5 drives a capstan roller 3, preferably of the vacuum type, and tape spools 1, bevelled wheels 6, 7 fast on said shaft 5 are selectively engaged, for forward or reverse rotation of said shaft 5, with a rotatably mounted disc 8 fast on a shaft 9 driven by an electric motor 10 through worm gearing 11, 12, when the disc or an element carried thereby is deflected by the attraction of either one of two electro-magnets 17, 18 to engage frictionally the said wheel 6 or 7 respectively. To brake the shaft 5 when the operative electromagnet 17 or 18 is deenergized, a stationary electromagnet 19 attracts a friction brake disc 21 rotating with but slidable axially on the shaft 5. As shown, the deflectable element comprises a ring 13 which is of magnetic, preferably resilient, material, is provided with a bevelled peripheral rubber rim 16 and is universally mounted by radial spring fingers 14 on the disc 8 which is of non-magnetic material. In Figs. 3 and 4 of the Provisional Specification (not shown), the disc 8 is of magnetic material and sufficiently thin and resilient to be deflected into engagement with wheels 6, 7, which latter carry rubber facings. One or more pairs of stabilizing rollers, freely rotatable about an axis parallel or transverse to the said shaft 5, bear on the upper surface of the disc 8. In Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), the ring 13 is universally mounted on the driving shaft through an intermediate ring pivoted to the ring and driving shaft about axes respectively at right-angles. The drive from the shaft to the tape spools 1 forms the subject-matter of Specifications 878,009 and 878,010.
