Abstract

[Also in Group XXIV] The capstan drive is effected through one or more pairs of normally disengaged friction wheels which are brought into driving engagement by the pressure of the pinch roller on the capstan. Permanent deformation of the friction wheels caused by their continuous engagement pressure particularly while stationary for lengthy periods is thus precluded. Fig. 1 shows the capstan 3 mounted on a lever 4 and driven from the motor shaft 12 through friction wheels 10, 8, 5 or through friction wheels 6, 5 depending on the direction of drive required. This direction is determined by rocking to one or the other of its terminal positions, a lever 15, which through levers 11, 9, 7 brings either wheels 10, 8 or the wheel 6 into operative but non-engaging position. Tape drive is then initiated by energizing a magnet 2a which through a lever 1a moves the pinch roller downwards and through the pressure exerted thereby on the capstan 3 forces the operative friction wheels into driving engagement. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), catering only for one direction of tape drive, shafts carrying the pinch roller and capstan, respectively, are mounted for limited rocking movement about axes perpendicular to these shafts, to achieve the necessary engagement pressure of the motordrive shaft directly with the capstan drive wheel 5. Fast rewind or advance of the tape spools may be effected by selective insertion in the drive from the motor of further friction wheels. Specification 698,476 is referred to.
