Abstract
A cycloalkane, in which the ring is at least C8, is oxidized, in the liquid state with free O2 in absence of an oxidation catalyst at 80-225 DEG , to a cycloalkyl hydroperoxide, the conversion to the latter of the cycloalkane being controlled to be not more than 30%. The product may be reduced (e.g. with a sulphide) to give a cycloalkanol/cycloalkanone mixture which may be oxidized with HNO3 to the corresponding alkanedioic acid. Specified starting materials are cyclooctane, cyclodecane and cyclododecane.
