Abstract

1,138,361. Coproduction of epoxides, glycols, alcohols and ketones. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 March, 1966 [9 April, 1965], No. 15188/65. Heading C2C. Epoxides, glycols, alcohols and ketones are prepared by oxidation, with molecular oxygen, at an elevated temperature, of a liquid mixture of a C 5-10 saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, or iso-pentane, and a mono-olefin. The epoxide and glycol are derived from the olefin. The reaction is preferably effected at 100-200‹ C. in the presence of an inert diluent and an initiator, e.g. U.V. radiation, peroxides or salts of Cu, Mn, Ni or Co. Examples relate to the preparation of propylene oxide, propylene glycol, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone from propylene and cyclohexane, and propylene oxide, propylene glycol, 2-methylbutanol-2 and 2-methylbutanone-3 from propylene and iso-pentane.
