Abstract
1,101,096. PN junction electromechanical tranducers. SIEMENS A.G. 6 July, 1965 [7 July, 1964], No. 28486/65. Heading HlK. [Also in Divisions G1 and H4] An electromechanical transducer comprises a semi-conductor monocrystal comprising at least one hard PN junction reverse biased to the region of breakdown and means for applying stress to the junction. The stress is preferably a tensile or compressive stress applied perpendicular to the plane of the junction. To obtain maximum variation of breakdown voltage for a given change of stress the junction is disposed in a 111 plane in germanium or in a 100 plane in silicon. When used in an acoustic transducer the junction is biased so as to be at breakdown under the maximum tensile stress expected, and when operated as a pressure sensitive switch the junction is biased to the point of breakdown at zero stress. By a hard junction is meant one exhibiting a sharp breakdown characteristic
