[Also in Divisions H3 and H4] An electromechanical transducer or mechanical amplifier comprises an elongated semiconductor crystal (1) which exhibits both piezo-electric and piezo-resistive effects. A mechanical oscillation is propagated in the crystal in the same direction as a chargecarrier drift produced by application of a D.C. potential between end electrodes (2, 3, Fig. 1). The mechanical oscillations are associated with piezo-electrically produced electrical oscillations which travel at approximately the same velocity as the charge carriers. The piezoresistive effect results in a further electric field which reinforces the original field. Suitable semi-conductors are the A III B V compounds, e.g. N-conductive GaSb or P-conductive GaAs. In the latter, the maximum piezo-electric effects are in the 111 direction. The apparatus may be pulse-operated, both the mechanical oscillations and the direct potential being applied in the form of simultaneous pulses.
