Abstract
1,099,548. Carrying conductors through partitions. BIR-VAC Ltd. May 26, 1966 [Nov. 25, 1965], No. 50237/65. Heading H2E. [Also in Division F2] The aperture through which rod 1 enters the vacuum chamber of which 4 is the wall is sealed by the radial expansion under longitudinal compression of an elastomeric sleeve 3, surrounding the rod where it passes through wall 4. A brass disc 5 is brazed to rod 1 at a point inside the vacuum chamber and a brass nut 8 and washer 9 threaded on from outside. The elastomeric sleeve 3 is compressed between a " Tufnol " (Registered Trade Mark) washer 10 and an oil-free polytetrafluorethylene washer 6 by these, and restrained against radial expansion, except in the vicinity of wall 4, by stainless steel sleeves 7 and 11. Alternatively, sleeve 3 may bear directly on disc 5 and tubes of polytetrafluorethylene and phenolic resin respectively replace sleeves 7 and 11. In this case washer 10 is replaced by a phenolic resin bush (22) (Fig. 2, not shown) which fits inside the phenolic resin tube, apart from a flange, the tube being movable to allow adjustment for various wall thicknesses. The rod 1 may be employed as an electrical conductor, and may be lubricated so as to rotate in sleeve 3, which then acts as a rotary shaft seal.
