Abstract

In a process of refining molten metal in which a stream of gaseous reagent is blown into the bath, the stream is surrounded over substantially its entire length with a shroud of radially constricting gases formed by combustion of a fuel such as methane. The fuel and the combustion-supporting gas may be supplied in such proportions that incomplete combustion of the former occurs. The process is particularly applicable to the use of an oxygen jet in steel making, but the injection of halogens into aluminium, of partially oxidized hydrocarbons into copper, and of nickel-magnesium alloy into iron to bring about spheroidization of graphite, are also referred to. Two suitable forms of lance for carrying out the process are described (see Group F4).
