Abstract

1,096,937. Position encoders. FEINMESS DRESDEN VEB. Aug. 10, 1966, No. 35808/66. Heading G4H. A movable member 1 incorporates photo - electric sensing devices and brushes 3 for sensing a scale 2 bearing uniformly - spaced reflectivemarks, a reflective coded scale 7 corresponding to the lower order digits representing the position of member 1, and a scale 6 comprising non-conductive segments 5 inset into a corrosion-resistant steel member 4 and corresponding to the higher order digits of the position, the scales 7 and 6 being sensed by a " lead and lag " arrangement. The scale 6 may be provided on a different member to member 4 which carries the other scales, e.g. on a spindle, the tracks running in the axial direction, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively the scale 6 may be on a disc which is rotated by the lead screw driving member 1, Fig. 5 (not shown).
