Abstract

1,161,561. Measuring position photo-electrically. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 8 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965; 2 Dec., 1965], Nos. 33831/65 and 51257/65. Heading G4H. Apparatus for measuring position, of the type in which a plurality of phase displaced sinusoidal signals is produced photo-electrically by a grating, is provided with means for determining the instantaneous sign of each of the signals and means for decoding the binary outputs of such means to give a digital indication of position. Three photo-cells are provided producing signals with relative phases 0, 90 and 180 degrees which are applied to a potentiometer so that a larger number of signals may be tapped off. For a decimal indication, 10 signals are tapped off between 0 and 180 degrees and applied to Schmitt trigger circuits to give a binary indication of the sign of the signals. The binary signals and their complements are taken in pairs to 20 NOR gates, the pairs being chosen so that only one NOR gate will give an output at a given time and that output will indicate the position of the grating in 20ths of the grating spacing. The output energizes corresponding indicator lamps. To provide higher order digits, encoders are geared to the means moving the grating. The encoders comprise two sets of switches which are operated by cams and serve to energize appropriate indicator lamps using signals derived from the fine positioning device. For a binary measurement, 8 signals are tapped off between 0 and 180 degrees and applied to Schmitt triggers. The binary outputs of the trigger circuits are switched in accordance with the sign of the 0 and 90 degree signals to appropriate parts of an encoding matrix to write the position into a binary store. Higher order digits are derived by a conventional coded track.
