1451681 Measuring displacement electrically; photo-electrically AUTOMATISME ET TECHNIQUES ELECTRONIQUES POUR LE CONTROLE 7 Jan 1974 [5 Jan 1973] 00587/74 Headings G1A and G1N Positioning apparatus includes motive means and measuring means comprising: a scale cooperating with pick-ups positioned to produce two alternating signals phase-separated by less than 180 degrees; displacement signal means; and further displacement signal means producing from the alternating signals a signal which, in two adjacent parts each smaller than half a period, varies monotonically from a first extreme value through a reference value to a second extreme value, whilst on both sides of the parts throughout the remainder of the period it does not come significantly closer to the reference value than is the respective extreme value. In known apparatus, Figs. 1 and 5, rotation of a disc D having sectors of alternating transparency causes photo-transistors T A , T B to emit roughly sine-wave signals in mutual quadrature which, when compared in a displacement counter H 1 with a demand set in a counter H 2 , produce a staircase error signal variable between positive and negative limits, causing a motor M (Fig. 1) (e.g. a torque or stepping motor) to seek a null. The rest position is subject to an uncertainty of one increment. The apparatus inserts into the staircase curve, Fig. 6, a segment y varying sinusoidally between extreme values ŒV 1 , providing thereby a finecontrol analogue of displacement between consecutive steps. The error outputs from the counter H 2 and from the amplifier SA, Fig. 5, are selected by the relay switches k 1 , k2 to change over when the contents of the counters H 1 , H 2 become equal. A magnetic detector may be used instead of a photo-electric detector.
