Abstract
1,138,082. Shaft position encoders. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. 19 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 18700/66. Heading G4H. Position measuring apparatus comprises a translucent cylinder on which is formed a diffraction grating with lines at an angle to the cylinder axis, and means to direct light through diametrically opposite sides of the cylinder to form a moirÚ fringe pattern. The position of the pattern may be directly indicative of the angular position of the cylinder, Fig. 1, (not shown). The position may be measured by counting the fringes with a photocell and a counter. Angular movements of a shaft 57, Fig. 2, may also be measured by a grating 44 on a cylinder 43 continuously rotated by a motor 51. Light from a source 45 is collimated by a lens 46 and passes through diametrically opposite portions of the grating 44. The rulings of the grating are inclined to the axis of cylinder 43 so that fringes are produced and detected by a bank of photocells 47. The cylinder 43 has a slot 53 which allows light to pass once per revolution from a source 56 to a fixed photocell 64 and a photocell 62 connected to the shaft 57. Photocells 64 and 62 respectively open and close a gate transferring pulses from the photocells 47 to a counter. The count recorded is thus proportional to the angular separation of cells 62 and 64.
