Abstract
1,226,392. Position encoders. WARNER & SWASEY CO. 26 June, 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 30562/68. Heading G4H. In a system for encoding the position of a movable member, errors in the encoder are compensated by an error signal source 17 which gives signals representing the error in different ranges of position; the error signal being subtracted from the indicated signal to give corrected position values. The movable member 11 is the slide of a machine tool and is displaced by a lead-screw 10. The binary encoder 12 connected to the lead-screw may be as described in Specification 1,190,845. The binary output of the encoder is converted to binary-codeddecimal by decoder 14. If the slide has a movement of 20 inches, the error signal source 17, which may be a record card, has 20 sections, the first giving the mean error in the range 0-1 inch, the second giving the mean error in the range 1-2 inches and so on. The range in which the slide is working is detected at 15 and a corresponding one of 20 gates 16 is opened to pass the appropriate error signal to the subtract circuit 19. If the total error of the lead-screw is o.oo3 inch, the maximum error in each range is about 0À0001 inch. In a second subtractor 24 a zero offset value is subtracted to that the encoder indicates the displacement from any selected initial position. The signals are converted to decimal form and displayed at 28.
