The displacement of a scale having uniformly spaced transparent and opaque sections is digitized by counting pulses, in the appropriate direction, produced by quadrature spaced sensing photo-electric cells, four pulses being produced by the passage of each pair of adjacent transparent and opaque sections of the scale past the sensing cells.
