Abstract
1,187,868. Electric counters. DECCA Ltd. 14 Nov., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967], No. 52908/67. Heading G4A. A counter designed to count in Gray code has a number of stages 19, 20, 21 connected by And gates 23, 25, the input being from a moving scale member having alternate opaque and translucent portions sensed by photo-cells 16, 17 spaced one unit distance apart, the scale portions being twice this distance in length. If the position shown represents an even number, the cell 16 changes from "0" to "1" when the number changes to the odd number above it, but does not change when the number changes to the odd number below it. Cell 17 does not change in the first case, and does change in the second. The lowest significance stage 19 responds directly to the input from cell 16 which is shown as i in Fig. 3. The output from photo-cell 17 is differentiated at 22 and applied to And gates 23 and 24. The "1" output from stage 19 is applied to And gate 23 and the "0" output to gate 24. Stages 20, 21 &c. change state whenever a "1" input is received. State 20 can therefore change only when stage 19 is in the "1" state, and cell 17 changes from "1" to "0". If stage 19 is in the "0" state, gate 24 is enabled so that an output from differentiator 22 is transmitted to stage 21 instead of stage 20. If both stages 19 and 20 are in the "0" state, the change signal is passed on to the next stage again by gate 26. Specification 1,176,556 is referred to.
