Abstract

1,096,085. Sewing machines. NECCHI S.p.A. May 11, 1966 [June 3, 1965], No. 20856/66. Heading D1G. A device adapting a sewing machine for basting comprises a needle mounted on a movable needle support, and a needle bar for driving the support in a first direction, the support and needle bar being movable relative to each other in a second and transverse direction, whereby such transverse relative movement causes the needle bar either to engage the support for driving the needle to effect stitching, or to disengage from the support to interrupt stitching. In a zig zag sewing machine the normal presser foot is replaced by a composite presser foot comprising a vertical cylinder 10 secured by a lug 11 to the presser bar 7 and carrying a lug 12 rigid with a presser foot pole 13. The needle 18 is carried by a holder 17 having a lateral extension 16 slidable in cylinder 10 through a vertical slot 4 therein, and biased upwardly by a spring 5 mounted within cylinder 10. The arrangement is such that the needle ibar 6 in a right hand position avoids holder 17 during its downward movement, while in a left hand position the needle bar when moving downwards engages holder 17 to actuate the needle for forming a stitch. The frequency of such engagement, and hence the stitch length, iscontrolled by cam means. It is stated that a straight-stitching machine may be provided with means for transversely shifting the special presser foot so as to intermittently position the needle in alignment with the path of the needle bar.
