1 of the needle in order that I may produce stitches of varying length disposed transversely or substantially so to the general line or direction of the ornamentation or embroidery produced by such stitches.
A further feature of my invention is the provision of a vibrating presser foot for use with such vibrating needle whereby the goods may be positively held against movement by the operator while the needle is in actual engagement therewith; passing in or out, as the case may be.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a machine employing a single vibrating needle and a vibrating presser foot through which said needle passes, it
will be understood that a plurality of vibrating needles, each provided with these parts, may be employed without departing from my invention.
, These and other features of my invention will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sewing machine to which the improvements forming the subject of my invention have been applied; Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3, is an enlarged elevation of the needle end of the machine;with the cover plate removed; Fig. 4 is a side elevation, on the same scale, of that part of the structure shown in Fig. 3 Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating a modified construction within the scope of my invention, and Figs.
6 and 7 are perspective views illustrating details of my invention.
In the drawings, 1 represents the frameof the machine; 2 the head, in whlch are contained the means for effecting vertical reciprocation of the needle-bar 3 which, in this type. of machine is'pivotally mounted at 4 so as to be capable of vibrating under the action of suitable mechanism. nism for imparting vertical reciprocation to the needle-bar is old and well known in the art, and no extended reference thereto will foot 7 carried by the end of said needlebar and vibrating therewith. An enlarged view of the presser foot is shown in Fig. 6, and this member comprises a sleeve 8 encircling the needle-bar which is slotted at 9 for the passageof a cotter pin 10 to retain said presser foot in place; the needlebar being hollow and" having a spring 11 bearing upon said cotter pin so as to impart pressure to the presser foot and at the same time render the same yielding. The lower part of the sleeve 8 is reduced at 12 so as to offer as little obstruction as possible to the viewing of the stitching operation, and the reduced portion is cut away at one side to admit the thread to the needle. The sleeve is also slotted at 13 for the passage of the set screw retaining the needle in place.
In the lower part of the head of the machine an arm 15 is pivoted at 16, having a sleeve 17 pivoted thereto at 18; said sleeve encircling the said needle-bar and through which said needle-bar may slide during its vertical reciprocation. Movement imparted to the arm 15 effects vibration of the needlebar, and the needle and presser foot attached thereto through the pivotal arrangement noted, and an important part of my invention relates to the means for imparting movement to said arm whereby said needlebar and its attached parts may be vibrated, and the means for adjusting the extent of such movement.
To this end, the following mechanism may be employed: Suitably carried by the frame'of the machine is a countershaft 20, having a gear wheel 21 which receives motion from a gear wheel 22 on the main shaft 23 of the machine. Onthe opposite end of the countershaft is a cam 24, with which engages a roller 25 carried by an arm 26 connected to a rock shaft 27 suitably journaled in or on the frame of the machine, and having at one end a substantially yoke-shaped Patented June 13, 1916.

lever is provided with adjustable screws 31 and 32 forming contact points; said screws having lock nuts 83 whereby they may be retained in their adjusted positions.
Return movement of the arm when the roller-carrying arm 26 is eleased from the action on the high side of the cam is imparted by means of a flat spring 35,,suitably connected to the head of the machine and having an end 36 bearing against the arm 15. It may be desirable at some times to position the needle with I respect to the stitch plate so thatitvibrates toward-the front or toward the rear, and this is accomplished by V regulating the adjustable contact pointsBl and 32 carried by the yoke-shaped lever one or which-bears upon the pin engaging the arm 15 to'vibrate the needle.
- With my improved form of J vibrating needle and vibrating presser-foot, I employ a reciprocating shuttle which is operated for proper coordination with. the needle in its various movements through the stitch plate.
Astindicated in the drawings, my improved needle-bar swings from the top of the head of the machine so that the are included in the range of movement is very flat.
The needle in its vibratory movement swings toward the operator and the goods may be moved back and forth independently of the movement of the needle and faster than its movements whereby stitches varying in length may be placed over the design to form a filling, body, or background, as may be desired; such stitches varying in length, depending upon the extent of movement imparted to the .fabric stretched in the tambour frame by the operator. When this filling is accomplished, the figure of the designfiower or whatnotcan be outlined by causing the needle to lay stitches along said outline while the tambour frame is gradually moved by the operator bringing the said outline in proper position for the stitches to be laid by the needle. In such action, the movement of the frame is relatively slow so that the needle moves faster than the goods and the outline stitches are substantially the same length, although the line formed thereby may vary in thickness, depending upon the angle of movement imparted to the goods with respect to the plane of movement of the vibrating needle. In all' instances, the character of work produced by the needle is varied by the ratio of move .ment of the goods carried by the tambourfr ame to the movement of the needle.

of a reciprocating needle-bar, a needle carried thereby, a presser-foot carried by said needle-bar, means for driving said needlebar and resser-foot in the formation of stitches including a main shaft, a counter shaft driven therefrom, a rock-shaft operated by the countershaft, means carried. by said r0ck-shaft for imparting vibrative movement to the needle-bar and the presserfoot carried thereby in one direction, and meansfor moving said parts in the opposite direction.

The combination, in a" sewing machine having a reciprocating needle-bar, a pivotal connection for the same whereby it may swing in addition to its vertical reciprocation, a needle carried by said needle-bar, a main shaft and means for driving the needlebar from said main shaft, of a countershaft, a rock-shaft driven from said countershaft, adjustable means carried by said rock-shaft for imparting vibrative movement to the needle-bar in one direction, and means for moving said needle-bar in the opposite direction.

The combination, in a sewing machine havinga reciprocating needle-bar, a pivotal connection for the same whereby it may swing in addition to its vertical reciprocation, a needle carried by said needle-bar, a main shaft and means for driving the needlebar from said main shaft, of a Presser-foot carried by said needle-bar, a countershaft, means fordriving the same from the main shaft, a rock-shaft, a cam on the countershaft for actuating said rock-shaft, means carried by said rock-shaft for imparting vibrative movement to the needle-bar and presser-foot in one direction, and means for moving said needle-bar and'presser-foot' in the opposite direction.
7. The combination, in a sewing machine, of a reciprocating needlE-bar, a pivotal connection for the same whereby it may swing means carried by said rock shaft for imparting vibrative movement to the needlebarin one direction, and means for moving said needle-bar in the opposite direction.
