A topping machine for root crops comprises for each crop row to be treated, a cutter 4 rotating about an axis extending in the direction of travel of the machine and arranged to remove leaves from the crop, a rotary flail with pivoted blades 14 to displace the cut leaves, and a cutter blade 18 which is adjustably mounted with respect to guides 20 whereby the blade can be arranged to cut only the leaf stalk or to cut the top off of the crop. The cutter blade 18 and guides 20 are mounted on a spring biased parallel linkage 21.
