Abstract

<PICT:1094322/C6-C7/1> In a method for reducing oxidic ores, particularly of iron, without melting, a cylindrical container or sagger 10 is charged with a unitary mass of ore 14 in the form of a smaller diameter hollow cylinder having a longitudinal diametral partition wall and separate masses of solid reducing agent e.g. pulverized coke filling the space 12 between the outer surface of the cylinder of ore and the inner surface of the container and the two spaces 16 between the surfaces of the partition wall of ore and the opposed inner surfaces of the hollow cylinder of ore. When heated, e.g. at 1000-1250 DEG C. in a ring-, chamber- or tunnel-furnace, to effect reduction, all the reducing agent is fully consumed and, after cooling, the resulting sponge metal is lifted out of the sagger as one piece.
