Abstract

[Also in Division F4] Water is removed from a travelling web 8 of paper or paperboard by compressing the web between rollers having openings or bores 4 and by directing compressed air on the outlet side of the rollers close to the pressure zone over the entire width of the web in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the web to prevent surface water from being carried along by the web. The rollers may comprise solid rollers with axial bores therein connected to openings 4, hollow rollers with bores 4 extending into the inside thereof, or hollow rollers 3 with supporting rollers 7, the bores 4 in rollers 3 being connected either to axial bores 5 or to grooves on either the inside of rollers 3 or on the outside of rollers 7. The grooves may cross the surface of roller 7 diagonally in one or both directions. At the ends of the rollers there are cap members which blow the water out of the bores and grooves into a tray below the rollers before bores 4 enter the pressure zone again. Rollers 3 may be of synthetic material or corrosion resistant metal.
