Abstract

1,092,581. Thermionic cathode constructions; electron beam apparatus. D. SCIAKY. Jan. 24, 1966, No. 3071/66. Heading H1D. The directly-heated cathode of an electron gun is formed from a metal strip shaped to provide two spaced clamping portions and a central hollow-cylindrical section closed at one end and connected with the clamping portions by divergent portions of the strip. The closed end of the cylindrical section emits an electron beam of generally circular crosssection. The cathode is clamped between supply leads 1, 2 and bars 4, 5 for easy replacement. The strip may be of Ta or W, and the cathode may be used in electron beam welding apparatus similar to that described in Specification 1,009,987.
