Abstract

A gypsum plaster composition comprises an aqueous stabilized dispersion of a natural or synthetic elastomer and an accelerator or retarder for the plaster in an amount which controls the setting time to give minimum cracking. The dispersion may contain 5-30% by weight dry elastomer which may be cispolyisoprene (natural or synthetic), a styrenebutadiene copolymer, or polychloroprene; a natural rubber latex in excess of 7% by weight of the plaster necessitates the use of 0.5-20% of sodium, potassium, aluminium or ammonium sulphates or 25-100% gypsum as an accelerator for the plaster (based on the weight of plaster), and a synthetic rubber latex constituting less than 5-7% by weight of the plaster requires 0.2-5% protein, e.g. casein, or borax, as retarder, the setting time being preferably adjusted to between 20 minutes and 10 hours. Stabilizers for the latex may be a non-ionic compound such as a polyoxyethylene ether of a phenol or a long-chain aliphatic alcohol. Thickeners such as methyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, or asbestos powder may be included. It is mentioned that the plaster may be admixed with sand, lime, whiting, or vermiculite.
