Abstract
A process for the manufacture of pigmentary titanium dioxide, wherein a water-soluble organic compound, in which each of two adjacent carbon atoms carries a hydroxyl group, is incorporated with an aqeous solution of titanyl sulphate containing a quantity of water not exceeding 55% by weight of the solution. and the aqeous solution is then heated in order to hydrolyse the titanyl sulphate and precipitate hydrous titanium dioxide. The aqueous solution which can be obtained by reacting sulphuric acid with ilmenite ore may contain a cation of vanadium, beryllium, aluminium, ferrous iron, manganese or chromium which does not form a water-soluble sulphate and which does not form a water-insoluble compound during the hydrolysis of the titanyl sulphate. The aqueous solution may also contain particles of titanium dioxide which act as nuclei during the hydrolysis and precipitation. The water-soluble organic compound is an a -hydroxy acid, e.g. glycollic or lactic acid, or a polyalcohol, e.g. mannitol, ethylene glycol, glycerol or erythritol.
