Abstract

[Also in Division D1] In a knitting machine, equipped with individually operable knitting needles, the needles are controlled by butts disposed in a multiplicity of planes, so that the butts in any one plane are well spaced apart with appropriate time intervals between, the butts are displaced by electro-magnetically operated devices arranged in the butt planes which are responsive to signals derived by electronically scanning the information borne by a pattern control means. As shown, the rotary cylinder and dial machine comprises a cylinder 1 in which are cut tricks 1a receiving a corresponding number of needles. Each needle is formed with a butt acted upon by cams mounted in a cam box supported on a plate 6. Beneath each needle a rockable control jack has an operating butt at its lower end and is provided with a plurality of frangible selector butts which are broken off so as to leave only the butt which is at the appropriate height. Each electromagnetically operated butt depressing device 28 consists of a pivoted cam 29 having a latch 30 which is coupled by a link 31 held by a tension spring 33 to a miniature solenoid 32. When a cam is projected inward to the surface of the cylinder 1, just after a selector butt has passed, it is held so as to press the following selector butt into the cylinder and then withdrawn before the third butt arrives. The relevant jack and needle will not then be raised by the raising cam at the feed and hence the needle will not knit. The solenoids 32 are disposed in groups in recesses formed laterally in vertical housing blocks 34, which are inclined so that the latches 30 are spaced vertically at equal intervals. The electronic pattern scanning system is responsive to a transparency which is scanned by a cathode ray tube whose X and Y scan generators are synchronized by the outputs of photo-electric cells responsive to the light from a source L shining through holes 44a drilled in a disc 44. The pulses derived from the cathode ray tube are routed through a matrix and a magnetic core store Figs. 11, 11A, 12, 12A, (not shown), to the solenoids 32.
