Static marks and surface damage are avoided by applying to at least one surface of an unexposed photographic material, e.g. a gelatino-silver halide material, a matting agent in the form of a powder consisting of particles having a diameter In the range of from 0À05 to 50 microns. Matting agents specified are silica, glass powder, carbonates of zinc, cadmium and strontium, calcium and magnesium salts of aliphatic acids, starch, terephthalic acid and polycarbonates. The matting agent is applied by powder spraying, by passing the photographic material through the matting agent suspended in air or in a fluidized bed, or electrostatically by giving different charges to the material and the matting agent.
