[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A carbon insert (18) is mounted by accurately forming its side surfaces, using the insert as an electrode in a spark erosion process to form a recess of complementary shape and size, and securing the insert in the recess. In Fig. 4 a carbon block 19 of greater length than an insert is used to form a recess, an insert then being cut from the block and secured. The recess surrounds apertures in a ported block (15) in a swash-plate pump or motor, the insert bearing against a rotating cylinder block (11).
