Abstract
1,090,742. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 3, 1965, No. 4734/65. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch has three contact members 20, 26, 28 forming two concentric pairs of cooperating contacts which are connected in parallel and opened in sequence so that the arc is drawn between the outer contacts 20, 26 and has its lower arc root blown on to a stationary annular arc-runner 70 by the magnetic field resulting from the current through the contacts and arc flowing in a loop-shaped path. The switch is opened by moving an operating member 50 downwards and when a shoulder 58 on the member 50 engages a flange 57 on a rod 32 carrying the contact 28, the contacts 28, 20 are opened. Subsequently a flange 60 on the rod 32 abuts a bearing member 42 secured to a sleeve 30 carrying the contact 26 and the contacts 26, 20 are opened. Springs 54, 56 provide contact pressure when the contacts are closed and permit the contacts to be operated in the correct opening and closing sequence. The annular arc runner 70 may have spiral slots to cause the arc to rotate on the runner and the disc-like fixed contact 20. In a modified arrangement, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), a single moving contact member co-operates with a fixed contact and a resiliently mounted contact.
