Abstract

1,090,394. Continuous casting - machines. ANACONDA AMERICAN BRASS CO. April 4, 1966, No. 14812/66. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting apparatus in which a mould 23 receives molten metal which solidifies therein and is continuously withdrawn as a cast bar, the mould 23 extends downwards from the bottom of a crucible and is surrounded by a water cooled block 19. To increase the heat exchange between the mould 23 and the block 19 an annular chamber 25 is formed that extends along a major portion of the downwardly extending portion of the mould and which contains a material 26 that will become liquid at the temperature of the molten metal being fed through the mould. This material 26 may be a metal, such as lead, aluminium or tin, or a fused salt, such as sodium chloride.
