Abstract
1,090,268. Electro-photographic liquid developers. DEPARTMENT OF SUPPLY, COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. March 22, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No.12106/65. Heading G2H. A method of controlling the relative polarity of liquid developers for electrostatic printing consists in forming a developer by suspending pigment particles in an insulating carrier liquid adding a liquid control material with a dielectric constant different to that of the carrier liquid but soluble therein, agitating the liquids, and then applying the developer to the latent electrostatic image to be developed whereby the relative attraction between particles and image causes deposition in conformity with the changed dielectric constant. The developer polarity may be changed sufficiently to give image reversal, by the formation of ions in the following ways: - (a) the formation of small amounts of oxygen dissolved in the liquid media which oxidize the liquid dielectric, suspended material, or the image surface. (b) the presence of catalyst metals such as copper or iron which produce ionizing organic compounds. (c) the presence of nitrogenous compounds, amino and amino derivatives which donate electrons or accept electrons. (d) the photo-mechanical excitation of small gas pockets in the media. Alcohols, aldehydes and esters supply ions during the passage of ozone through the liquid. An aromatic. hydrocarbon liquid is ionized by dissolving therein 20 moles per litre of myristic acid, or by adding naphthalene or tetralin, and then passing ozone. Ionization is inhibited to increase resistivity by adding olefins such as cyclohexane or octene. Minor ionization is caused by adding large amounts of lanoline, naphthenic acid, or oleic acid. Small amounts of ethyl alcohol or dibutylphosphate also cause ionization in hydrocarbon liquids. Various proprietary substances are mentioned in examples given.
