Abstract

A method of forming a vitreous fibre, comprising heating a mass of vitreous material in a melting first region, drawing from the mass a fibre of vitreous material at a temperature at least equal to the softening point thereof, drawing the fibre through a "soaking" second region, the ambient temperature of which lies below the softening point of the fibre and not substantially lower than the annealing point thereof, said second region being constituted by a flame which does not deposit a coating on the fibre, and drawing the fibre thus formed into a third region, the ambient temperature of which lies below the strain point thereof. The said mass may be a quartz rod, the tip of which is raised to the softening temperature by causing an oxyhydrogen flame to impinge on it, and a carbon monoxide flame constitutes the second "soaking" region and overlaps the boundary of the oxyhydrogen flame. One third region above is constituted by the luminous part of an exothermally reacting mixture which comprises a carboniferous gas and less than a stoichiometric proportion of oxygen and which serves to deposit an adherent coating of pyrolytic carbon on the fibre.
