Abstract
PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the title optical fiber at a low cost by heating a porous glass preform, and spinning the obtained contracted opaque glass preform contg. closed cells as such. CONSTITUTION:A metal alkoxide is hydrolyzed to obtain a sol, and the sol is dried to obtain fine glass particles. The fine glass particles obtained from the glass forming precursor are collected to form a porous glass preform. The porous glass preform 1 is placed in a quartz furnace core tube 3 through a carrier 6, and heated by a heating element 4. In this case, a halogen-contg. gas is firstly introduced from an opening 5, and dehydration is preferably carried out at a relatively low temp.
