Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having excellent corrosion resistance, by carrying out clarifying heat-treatment of a porous material in an atmosphere containing nitrogen and a reducing gas, thereby introducing nitrogen into the glass. CONSTITUTION:A porous material composed of glass soot is deposited on the outer circumference of a glass rod for light transmission. The rod is heat-treated in an atmosphere containing a nitrogen-containing gas and a reducing gas. The heat-treated rod is heated at a higher temperature to obtain transparent glass rod. The Si-O bond is broken, Si-H bond is increased and nitrogen is introduced into the glass by this treatment.
