Abstract
PURPOSE:To directly manufacture an anhydrous quartz glass tube of high purity without forming a glass bulk by heat volatilizing a high temp. volatile substance in the inner layer of a two-layer porous preform, dehydrating the outer layer, and converting the preform into transparent glass. CONSTITUTION:Inner preform 14 is deposited on the bottom of rotating and rising substrate 13 with burner 10, and outer preform 16 on preform 14 with burner 12 to form a two-layer porous preform. Preform 16 is made of quartz glass fine powder 143 contg. carbon soot 141. The two-layer preform is then heated with heater 18, Cl2 or other gas for anhydrous treatment and O2 gas etc. are introduced into the system from inlets 20, 22, respectively to dehydrate outer preform 16. At this time, inner preform 14 is also heated to a high temp., and soot 141 combines with O2 and disappears. Outer preform 16 is converted into transparent glass by heating with heater 24, and after treating the inside with hydrofluoric acid the preform is heated and drawn to a predetermined diameter in O2 gas.
