Abstract

Novel 12-aminonaphthindolizinediones of the formula <FORM:1087221/C2/1> wherein Y is H or one CH3 group are obtained by treating the corresponding 12-nitro compound with an appropriate reducing agent. The reduction may suitably be carried out by heating the 12-nitronaphthindolizinedione with acid stannous chloride, iron powder under B<\>aechamp conditions, zinc and glacial acetic acid, alkaline ferrous hydroxide, alkaline glucose, zinc and dilute aqueous NaOH, aqueous sodium hydrosulphite, aqueous sodium or potassium sulphide, ammonium sulphide, or a zinc dust/ethanol mixture. The product may be isolated from the reaction mixture by filtration, washing and recrystallization from o-dichlorobenzene, monochlorobenzene or nitrobenzene. The products may be converted into acylated or aroylated amino derivatives or azomethine derivatives from which dyestuffs or pigments can be produced.
