Abstract
Copper-containing azo dyestuffs are manufactured by coupling one molecular proportion of a tetrazotized 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dialkoxydiphenyl in either order with one molecular proportion each of 1 - hydroxynaphthalene-3 : 6 : 8-trisulphonic acid and of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0597130/IV/1> (wherein R1 represents hydrogen or -N=N- aryl, the aryl residue being free from hydroxy or carboxylic acid groups in o-position to the azo group, and R2 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or acyl), and treating the resulting dyestuff with a copper-yielding agent. The products dye cotton and regenerated cellulose in bright blue shades. In examples, dianisidine is diazotized and coupled with sodium 1-hydroxynaphthalene - 3 : 6 : 8 - trisulphonate and then with the sodium salt of: (1) 2-phenyl-, -p-tolyl- or - p - methoxyphenyl - amino - 5 - naphthol-7-sulphonic acid; and (3) 1-phenylazo-2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid. The product in each case is refluxed with an ammoniacal copper sulphate solution, which, in the case of (3), may be in excess, thereby effecting also oxidation of the o-aminoazo grouping to the triazole ring.
