Abstract

1,087,196. Soldering. DOCK GRINDING & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1965 [Feb. 11, 1964], No. 5580/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Division D1] In attaching a cutting tip to the shank or body of a cutting blade or looper for carpet making, the surfaces to be joined are each formed with angularly related portions which make an obtuse angle with each other and a metal shim is soldered to the surfaces. A knife or cutting device tip 12 is joined to a straight shank 13 at a joint surface having two angularly related portions by holding the shank on a table 18 by a toggle clamp 19, holding the tip 12 to a table 24 by a toggle clamp 26, placing a strip 30, comprising a central copper shim disposed between layers of silver solder, between the tip and shank and moving the table 24 fowards so that the strip is caused to adopt the shape of the surface to be joined. A flux of borax in water is brushed on to the surfaces and an oxyacetylene flame is employed to effect soldering by playing on the tip 12. The tip may be of 80% tungsten carbide, 20% cobalt and the shank may be of carbon spring steel. A looper tip may be of 90% tungsten carbide, 10% cobalt and the shank of carbon steel. A looper is described in which the joint surfaces have portions inclined at 135 degrees to one another.
