Abstract
386,909. Tools ; brazed joints. TOOL METAL MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., 11, Victoria Street, London.-(Krupp Akt.- Ges., F. ; Essen, Germany.) Aug. 16, 1932, No. 22988. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii), and 83 (iv).] In securing the tip b of a metal cutting or like tool or working implement to the shank a, a perforated insert c of tough metal such as iron or steel is placed between the tip and shank and is brazed thereto. The insert is preferably coated on both sides with copper which effects the brazed joint, or alternatively the copper may be applied to the parts to be joined, e.g. by applying small pieces of copper to the tip immediately before brazing. Wire clamps d may secure the parts together for brazing or simple wires may be passed through the perforations to position the parts, the insert being preferably extended to project beyond the edges of the joint to receive the clamps &c. and being subsequently trimmed off, preferably by grinding. The edges of the insert may be bent upwards towards the tip, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a trough, the molten copper being retained inside the walls thereof and also on the projecting surface f of the shank. The tip b is made of a cutting material having a high resistance to shearing, such as a carbide, boride, nitride, or silicide alloy and the shank is made of an alloy steel containing a high percentage of alloying elements such as tungsten, cobalt, and chromium.
