345,171. Making tools. KRUPP AKT.-GES., F., Essen, Germany. June 14, 1930, No. 18310. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1929. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Brazing.-Tools, such as twist, rock, coalmining, and other drills, milling-cutters and other bits of complicated shape, with working edges of hard metal alloys soldered to a steel or iron body such as a shaft or disc, are made by inserting between the body and working part a thin sheet or strip of tough metal or alloy having a coefficient of expansion approximately equal to that of the working part, and then soldering the parts together. Cracks in the working part are thus avoided. The working part may consist of carbide of tungsten or molybdenum, with or without metals such as cobalt, nickel, or iron and the insert may consist of molybdenum, nickel-iron, chromium or nickel. A thin sheet or strip of copper covered with borax may be first applied to the body, then a strip of molybdenum, then another strip of copper and finally the working part. These parts are heated in an electric furnace to 1100‹ C. Inserts of tough metal coated on both surfaces with soldering metal and flux may be prepared and stocked for use as required.
