A forging press includes a frame 10 within which are mounted dies 13a and 13b which are insulated from the frame and act as poles for heating a workpiece 15. The upper die 13b is held electromagnetically or by suction to a movable workhead 11 while the lower die is fixed. The dies are provided with water cooling channels 17a and 17b, electric terminals 14a and 14b, refractory facings 16a and 16b, and insulating discs 18a and 18b. In an example a chromium nickel steel workpiece of 10 kgms. is heated by a 3000 amp. current at 3 volts to a forging temperature of 1280-1300‹ C. in 1¢ minutes, the cross-head 11 then being lowered to shape the workpiece. Before the dies 13a and 13b meet the current is switched off to prevent short circuiting.
