Abstract

In a paper-making machine in which pulp is directed into the converging passage between an upper wire and a lower wire, there is a stationary pressing element on one of the wires to urge the wires together to form the converging passage, the shape of the element and the tension in the other wire being so chosen with respect to the pulp that a substantially constant pressure-i.e. the pressure in the pulp as it leaves the headbox-is maintained on the pulp as it flows through the passage. The pressure may be increased on the pulp once the actual web has been formed. The pressing element, which may act on the upper or lower wire, comprises a plurality of slats extending transversely of the web forming direction and obliquely to the wire. The slats are mounted in a suction box. The slats may form a curved wire-engaging surface-suitable examples being given. The headbox, element, and breast roll are all adjustable so that the pulp leaves the headbox adjacent the converging passage and in the axial direction thereof.
