Abstract
Heavy mineral concentrates are treated for the purpose of removing or reducing surface staining by agitating the concentrate in the form of a pulp having a density of more than 60% solids in the presence of a fluorine compound, a reducing agent and a metal having a greater negative potential than the metal producing the staining. Preferably chromium, zinc, aluminium, magnesium or titanium is used to diminish iron staining. The agitation may be carried out in attritioning cells which have no exposed metal parts, they can be made of steel with a resistant rubber lining or of such materials as wood. The metal employed may consist of a strip or sheet submerged in the pulp and the fluorine compound may be hydrofluoric acid or sodium silicofluoride. The reducing agent may be a hydrosulphite, bisulphite, metabisulphite or thiosulphate preferably the sodium or potassium salts.
