Abstract

1,085,361. Tubular heat exchangers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. June 26, 1964 [March 29. 1963], No. 12590/63. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger coinprises a casing 14 in which a bundle of tubes 16 extends downwardly from an end of at least one lever 30 pivoted at 32 from a point 34 near the upper end of the casing the other end of the lever being hinged to a rod 40 contacted by the same fluid as the casing and having an expansion coefficient and length such that the header 20 remains at substantially the same horizontal plane regardless of thermal expansion of the casing. In the form shown the tubes 16 extend vertically between an upper outlet header 20 and a lower inlet header 18. The tubes are supported by a grid 38 depending from the levers 30. The rods 40, of a material, e.g. stainless steel, with a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the casing extend from the levers 30 to the bottom 42 of the casing. Expansion loops (not shown) may be included in the lower ends of the tubes 16 and the headers may be provided with flexible seals (not shown).
