Abstract

A dispensing apparatus for dispensing a measured quantity of liquid, such as beer, comprises a pair of cylinders 10, 11 with common liquid connections 13, 14, a floating piston 23, 24 mounted in each cylinder, the liquid connections having an opening into each cylinder on each side of the piston thereof such that a control valve means (63, 50, Fig. 1) can selectively couple one opening of each cylinder to a source of liquid under pressure and the other opening of each cylinder to an outlet. The cylinders 10, 11 are connected to a body member 12 by tubes 21, 22 which form guides for the pistons 23, 24. The cylinders are closed at the outer ends by plates 29, 30 having openings 40 communicating with ports 39 in one end of the tubes, the other ends of the tubes being connected to a passage 14 in the body; the plates may be axially adjusted in order to vary the size of the measuring chamber. A passage 13 passes through the body and communicates with both cylinders. The control valve means includes a disc (63, Fig. 1) rotatable in a housing 45, the disc having passages arranged, in one position thereof, to connect the cylinder spaces on the outer sides of the pistons to a common outlet pipe (61) and, in an alternative position, to connect the inner cylinder spaces to the outlet pipe. The disc is prevented from being rotated until the liquid is dispensed by means of a plunger 69 in the flow pipe 68 engaging with a detent 67.
