A duplicating machine for printing from a mirror image matrix secured to a table 1 on to a moistened copy sheet fed down a shoot 5 comprises a carriage 2 supporting an impression roller 3 mounted on arms 8 and a moistening element fed with fluid by a pump 39, and an endless belt 10 adapted to be driven from a motor 23 and wound on a spool 11 on an axle 12 so as to swing the roller 3 into co-operation with the copy sheet and move the carriage 2 and hence the roller 3 and the moistening element automatically through the printing cycle, Fig. 1 (not shown). Each arm 8 is provided with a follower 14 which engages a control cam 13, and a pin 15 on each cam maintains the carriage stationary until the roller is in its operative position. An electromagnetically releasable latch device K is provided to look the carriage at any selected point, and a limit switch, actuated by the carriage, may be provided at a selected position to interrupt the motor circuit. A guide bar 41 determines the amount of fluid supplied by the piston pump 39. The carriage is returned to its initial position by belts 24 and a spring 19 returns the spool 11 and the cams 13 to their initial positions. A brake 29 is used to decelerate the carriage. The roller may be raised after a short operative stroke if selective printing is required. The roller 3 may alternatively be mounted at each end on a pair of pivoted arms which are connected by a wedge device adapted to alter the pressure applied by the roller to the copy sheet, Fig. 9 (not shown).
