Abstract

1,081,721. Multi-stage flash evaporators; distillation of water. BALDWIN-LIMA-HAMILTON CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1964, No. 42032/64. Heading B1B. In a distillation apparatus for salt water comprising a horizontally-disposed tubular shell 20 divided by vertical partitions 36 into a series of flash chambers 21 through which the preheated water flows successively, each chamber having a distribution box 26 at the water-inlet end of the chamber and condenser tubes in the upper part the water flows into and out of the chambers through passageways passing through the partitions, each passageway including an orifice associated with an adjustable partial restriction, and means are provided for adjusting the positions of the partial restrictions with respect to the orifices whereby the flow of water through the passageways is regulated so that the water level 27 of water in the flash chambers is maintained low but sufficient to ensure that the orifices are completely immersed in water thereby preventing the flow of flashed vapour between the chambers. In Fig. 4, the flow through orifices 34 is regulated by altering the angles of rectangular plates 42 pivoted on their horizontal centre axes on rods. The plates are smaller than the orifices, and each plate is of sufficient size that, when in its maximum flowrestricting position, the desired minimum flow of water through the passageway is permitted. In Fig. 10, the flow through orifice 347 is regulated by conical member 349 which is connected to float 354 by a rod 353 which is pivoted on pin 355. In this embodiment, the flow is automatically regulated for minor changes of water level in the preceding flash chamber. For making major adjustments, the level of the float on rod 353 is adjusted by means of threads 356.
