Abstract

The external cooling system has top and bottom channels connecting the transformer tank to a number of vertical tubes, using natural convection. The cross-sectional areas of the channels and of the top of each tube are such that the coolant flow is equal in the various tubes. Each of these areas is reduced as the distance tank-tube increases. The coolant enters channel (2), descends through a number of vertical tubes (3), and re-enters the tank at the bottom via channel (4). Channels (2) and (4) may be cylindrical and are tapered. Additional control of flow is achieved by appropriate aperture sin constricting pieces (5) at the top of each vertical tube.
