Abstract
1,086,731. Flash-type evaporators; distillation of water. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 15, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 12180/64. Heading BIB. In a flash evaporator divided into stages by partitions 11, the liquid being evaporated enters each stage through an upwardly-directed converging passage bounded on one side by a plate 18 which extends longitudinally through the stage, a horizontal plate 19 with a downwardly-inclined lip 20 being mounted over the plate 18 forming an elongated outlet from which the liquid passes across the stage in the form of a sheet of particles and partially flashes into vapour. The vapour flows through openings 21 which lead to a condenser (not shown). Heated liquid enters the first stage through aperture 13, and the unevaporated liquid pases from stage to stage through apertures 23. The apparatus may be used for the distillation of water. Each passage is formed by a side wall of the evaporator and the plate 18, which is preferably inclined at an angle of 7‹ to 25‹ with the side wall. Lip 20 should form an angle of 7‹ to 30‹ with plate 18. An evaporator wherein each stage has two converging passages is also described.
