[Also in Group XIII] In a device for distributing a film of liquid, e.g. cooling-liquid or liquid to be cooled, for flow over one or more surfaces 1, an overflow trough 5 has an open top narrowed by directing at least one edge inwards as at 6, serrations 8, Fig. 3, being provided on that edge for distribution of liquid from a feed pipe 9 in the trough. A flared discharge slot 10 extends the length of the feed pipe in Fig. 3 and may supply liquid for cooling another liquid, such as nitric acid, which flows between plates 1 to a discharge tube 3. Modifications are described in which the plates form continuations of the trough sides either by mounting of the trough with its wall flush with the plate or by making the trough wall integral with the plate. In such a unit, Fig. 1a, the liquid may flow over only one edge of the trough and over one side of a single plate. Regarding the form shown in Fig. 3, the tube 3 may be formed by joining the tops of the plates 1 to the inner surfaces of the inturned extensions 4 of the trough walls. Instead of a slot 10, the feed-pipe may have a series of discharge holes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the distribution of liquid over horizontal cooling pipes instead of over plates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
